Unfortunately, this kind of gender racism will continue unless we see Asian men in leading romantic roles. The most prominent one I can recall was Jet Li’s character in the 2000 movie, where he was initially to kiss the late Aaliyah but the ending was re-scripted to a hug when producers feared mainstream American audiences would find the kiss too uncomfortable. Le’s a sociology professor at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.Le says that creates what he calls a “cultural penalty” in the dating world. From an early age, he was told he needed to marry a Korean woman. Le thinks at least part of this is due to pervasive cultural stereotypes. So naturally, he rebelled.“I didn’t necessarily say to myself, I wouldn’t marry a Korean-American woman, but I definitely thought, there’s no way I am going to marry a women straight from Korea,” he said. You know them: Asian-American men are at best nerdy, at worst, neutered or not masculine enough.
Also a black guy who’s gone to Denny’s many many times would have even a more accurate opinion on the matter.
If you’re not a white guy, then your opinion on how people respond to “white guys” can only be that of a spectator.
To make an analogy, imagine you heard people say over and over, “Waitresses at Denny’s restaurants hate black guys.” Now ask yourself whose opinion on this would matter: An individual waitress who works at one Denny’s, a random customer who’s gone to Denny’s a few times, or a black guy who’s gone to Denny’s twice a day everyday for three years straight in every state in the entire country?
And then he cited research that actually quantifies this.“In crunching the numbers, they found on an aggregate level, Latino men have to make something like ,000 more than a comparable white man for a white women to be open to dating them,” he said, adding for African-American men, that figure is closer to 0,000. It’s 0,000 more than a comparable white male would make.“I think that’s kind of telling,” Le said.
But it’s not clear how many Asian-American men are looking for white women to marry.
